Autumn in the New Forest

Autumn in the New Forest

I seem to be making a habit of exploring the UK a little more this year and I have to say I’ve rather enjoyed it. I’ve explored Bath, Wales, Cornwall and the Lake District to name just a few trips. But somewhere I have driven past numerous times and never explored is the New Forest. At the beginning of this month I finally visited!

It was beautiful, more beautiful than I imagined. The weather helped though as we were extremely lucky. Tom and I got the train to Brockenhurst so walked absolutely everywhere the whole weekend.

We stayed at The Huntsman Hotel which was very central and only 5 minutes walk from the station. This place has a modern twist on classic English country style and the staff were unbelievably welcoming.

As we caught an early train the first thing we did when we arrived in Brockenhurst was scout out food. It always goes back to food with us 🙂 The best place to do this in Brockenhurst is to head to Brookley Road and find the cute little local cafes.

After we’d had some brunch we decided to take a random stroll around to familiarise ourselves with our surroundings. I also made it my mission to get to the The Pig Hotel. After all, you cannot visit Brockenhurst and not go to this place. I’m so glad we made the trip there as it was truly amazing. We ended up spending our whole afternoon relaxing by the fire and drinking one too many glasses of wine and whisky. What else are you supposed to do with an afternoon in the countryside..?!

Before it got dark we made our way back to our hotel to check in and get ready for a nice dinner. I’d read about the amazing pizzas at The Huntsman so after all the walking I was looking forward to tucking into one of them.

On the Sunday morning we woke up bright and early after a refreshing nights sleep to line our stomachs with a yummy breakfast in preparation for a 9 mile walk.

The next 3 hours or so we’re spent wondering through leafy country lanes, woodlands and fields all around Brockenhurst. We were even luck to stumble across some wild horses and free roaming piggies! I was beside myself but not sure Tom was as impressed!!

For the first time exploring the New Forest I definitely think we picked the right time of year to visit. It was so autumnal and the beautiful shades of autumn were everywhere you looked.

As I read this post back to myself it basically sounds like we went to the countryside for the weekend to eat and drink. Well, I guess that’s what we did. What else is there to do in the countryside..? There was a little bit of walking involved in there somewhere too. But on a more serious note, sometimes it’s worth escaping to rest and recharge. I certainly feel better for it now. The New Forest is definitely now up there on my list of places I’d recommend.

Where do you like to go and relax or recharge?
